Error When Adding Payment Method
When trying to add a new payment method (credit/debit card) to a WhatsApp Business Account through Meta Business Manager, some users get the error: "The card type you entered isn’t supported. Try a different card." , even with valid cards already accepted on other Meta accounts.
Billing & payments - WhatsApp Business account with $0.00 balance and no payment method.
Error when adding a debit/credit card: card type not supported.
Bug Status
This is a known bug on Meta’s side and has already been reported. The fix depends entirely on Meta.
Workaround / Solution
1. Check the account currency
In some cases the account currency is set to an invalid value (e.g. "AUSD"). Changing it to USD restores the add-card flow.
2. Add the card to the Business Portfolio first
The card must first be added to the Meta Business Portfolio before it can be added to the WhatsApp Business Account. Without this step, even valid cards are rejected.
Payment methods — add the card to the Business Portfolio first, then it becomes available for the WhatsApp Business Account.
Recommended Procedure
Open Meta Business Manager: https://business.facebook.com/
Go to the Business Portfolio settings.
Open Billing & payments → Payment methods.
Add the credit/debit card at the Business Portfolio level.
Confirm the account currency is set to USD (or another supported currency).
Go back to Billing & payments → Accounts → WhatsApp Business accounts.
Select the WhatsApp Business Account and click "Add payment method".
The card previously registered in the Business Portfolio should now be available and accepted.
Internal Support Procedure
Guide the customer through the procedure above (add card to Business Portfolio first, verify currency).
If the issue persists, collect: Workspace ID, WABA ID, Business ID, Phone Number, screenshots of the error message and a clear description of the issue and then open a formal support ticket by email with us at ticket@uchat.com.au.
If escalation is required, we will submit a Direct Support ticket to Meta with all the information of your ticket.
Conclusion
The "card type not supported" error is, in most cases, caused by an invalid account currency or by the card not being registered in the Business Portfolio. Following the procedure above resolves the issue without needing a Meta ticket in the majority of cases.
