Messenger Marketing Messages

Messenger Marketing Messages

Overview

Messenger marketing messages let you send promotional broadcasts to people who've agreed to receive them. This doc walks through connecting Facebook integrations, setting up marketing opt-ins, creating marketing templates, and launching a Messenger marketing campaign, plus the two errors you're most likely to run into along the way.

1. Re-connect your integrations first

In order for the integrations to work, Your Facebook page, business account and Ad account needs to be reconnected so that the required permissions can be fetched

Connect your Facebook Page

Go to the Facebook tab and connect your page. If it's already connected, reconnect it anyway

Now, the permission screen pops up; give permissions:

this makes sure you're granted the correct, up-to-date permissions.

Connect your Facebook Ads account

Head to Integrations and connect Facebook Ads.

During setup you'll see an option to "invite people to receive marketing messages" — make sure that's switched on, along with the toggle right after it. Both need to be enabled. Once they are, click Continue, then Save.

2. Set up the opt-in

Meta requires people to explicitly opt in before you're allowed to send them marketing messages — you can't skip this step.

Here's how to build it:

  1. Go to Flows and create a Send Message node.

  2. Search for and add the "Marketing Opt-in Request" block.

  3. Create a topic for it — something simple like "First Opt-in" works fine.

  4. Set the button label — "Opt-in," "Get updates," or "Sign up" are all good options.

  5. Write the message text, e.g. "Opt in to receive more updates regarding our products."

Until a user completes this opt-in, they simply won't be eligible to receive any marketing template you send — so this has to go out first.

3. Create your marketing template

With the opt-in in place, go to Contents → Marketing Templates and click Create New Template.

Give it a name ("My First Template" is fine for testing).

You'll be asked to pick a format — there are four to choose from:

  • Text — just a plain message, nothing fancy.

  • Button — a message paired with a clickable button.

  • Generic — a carousel-style card with a title and message.

  • Media — for sending an image, video, or similar.

If you're just testing things out, the Text format is the easiest way to get a feel for how everything fits together. Write your message and click Create.

4. Set up a messaging campaign

Scroll down to Messaging Campaigns — this is where every campaign you're running will show up. If the list looks empty, click Sync and give it a moment to pull everything in.

11.png

To create a new one, click +Campaign and work through the following:

  1. Choose your ad account — it'll show up in a dropdown if it's already connected, or you can add the account ID manually.

  2. Give the campaign a name.

  3. Add a Pixel ID if you have one — this is optional.

  4. Pick a budget type: daily or lifetime.

  5. Set your budget amount. Note that the platform enforces a minimum, so if you get a "budget too low" message, just bump the number up.

  6. Click Create.

12.png

The campaign should sync automatically after that. If it doesn't show up, click Sync again and it'll appear shortly.

5. Send the broadcast

Before sending anything, double check that the person you're messaging has actually opted in to the topic you're about to use — this is the step people most often forget.

  1. Go to Broadcast → New Broadcast.

  2. Select "Facebook Marketing Message."

  3. Give the broadcast a name.

  4. Choose the relevant user tag or segment, if you're using one.

  5. Select the campaign you set up earlier.

  6. Pick the marketing topic that matches the opt-in the user completed.

  7. Choose your content mode — either a Flow or a Marketing Template.

  8. Select the template itself.

  9. Click Save.

16.png

That's it — the message goes out to everyone who's opted in, and you should see it land in the live chat shortly after.

6. Two errors you'll probably run into

These two show up often enough that it's worth knowing about them ahead of time rather than being caught off guard.

Error

Why it happens

How to fix it

"Calls to this API have exceeded the rate limit"

Meta only allows one opt-in request with the same title to be sent to a given person once per week.

Wait out the week before resending that same opt-in, or use a different topic if you need to reach them sooner.

"The message campaign is still being populated. Please try again later."

The campaign was just created, and Meta is still processing it behind the scenes.

Give it roughly 1–2 hours after creating a new campaign before trying to send through it.
