Enabling Chat Notifications on Mobile Devices

Turn on chat notifications

Get notified when you receive a new chat message, even when the chat is not open.

For text messages, notifications may show the message text. For images, files, and other non-text messages, they show “You have a new message.”

Important: use Move to Mobile

To receive notifications, you must open the chat as its own web app—not inside the preview page.

The standard preview chat page embeds the widget inside another page. Embedded chat windows cannot enable push notifications, so you may not see the Notifications (bell) button there.

  1. Open the chat preview on your computer.

  2. In the chat header, select Move to Mobile.

  3. Scan the displayed QR code with your iPhone or Android phone.

  4. Open the link from your phone.

This opens the standalone chat page that supports notifications.

iPhone and iPad

You need iOS or iPadOS 16.4 or later.

  1. After opening the standalone chat page from the QR code, make sure it is open in Safari.

  2. Tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.

  4. Tap Add.

  5. Open the new chat icon from your Home Screen.

  6. In the chat header, tap the Notifications (bell) button.

  7. Tap Allow when your iPhone asks for permission.

You can now receive notifications when the chat app is not open.

If you do not receive notifications on iPhone

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap Notifications.

  3. Find the chat app by name.

  4. Turn on Allow Notifications.

Also check that Focus or Do Not Disturb is not hiding notifications.

Android phones and tablets

These steps use Google Chrome. Menu names can differ slightly on other Android browsers.

  1. Open the standalone chat page from the QR code in Chrome.

  2. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.

  3. Tap Add to Home screen or Install app.

  4. Confirm the installation.

  5. Open the new chat icon from your Home Screen or app list.

  6. In the chat header, tap the Notifications (bell) button.

  7. Tap Allow when Android asks for permission.

If you do not receive notifications on Android

  • Open your phone’s Settings > Notifications and make sure notifications are allowed for the chat app or Chrome.

  • In Chrome, check that notifications are allowed for the chat website.

  • Make sure Battery Saver, Do Not Disturb, or a similar setting is not blocking notifications.

Customize the chat app name and icon

Administrators can control the name and icon shown when the chat is added to a phone’s Home Screen.

  1. Open Webchat Widget Settings.

  2. Open Chat Header.

  3. Update Header Name to change the app name.

  4. Update Header Logo to change the app icon.

If the chat has already been added to a phone, remove the existing Home Screen icon and add it again to use the updated name or logo.

Troubleshooting

I cannot find the Notifications button

Make sure you used Move to Mobile and opened the QR-code link as a standalone web app. The bell button does not appear in the embedded preview chat page.

I tapped “Don’t Allow” by mistake

You can enable notifications later in your phone’s notification settings.

I changed phones or removed the chat icon

Use Move to Mobile again, scan the QR code, add the chat to your Home Screen, and enable notifications again.

Will notifications show private information?

Text notifications can display message text on your lock screen. Your phone’s notification settings control whether previews are shown. You can turn off notification previews in your phone settings at any time.
